Patients
having mammograms at Southeastern Radiology have
a special entrance into The Women’s Imaging
Center. Upon signing in, you will wait in the lobby
until you are escorted back to a private sub-waiting
area where you will change in one of the private
dressing rooms, and then wait until your technologist
is ready for you. The sub-waiting area offers patients
tea and cookies and educational material to read.
A mammogram is a low dose x-ray of the breast.
It is used to find cancer and other problems in
the breast. Mammography can detect breast cancer
up to two years before lumps can be felt during
a physical breast exam.
It is important to remember that 8 out of every
10 lumps that are detected ARE NOT cancer. Even
when cancer is detected, many breast cancers are
cured if detected early and treated.
The American Cancer Society guidelines suggest
that women have their first mammogram, a baseline,
between ages 35-40. The American Medical Association
recommends annual mammograms for women 40 years
of age and up.
How
Is a Mammogram Done?
A technologist places the breast between two flat
surfaces. These surfaces are gently pressed together
to flatten the breast to an even thickness. Mammograms
do not have to be painful. Technologists at Southeastern
Radiology are trained to work with the patient
to determine the right amount of compression and
to reach each patient’s own comfort level.
We
think your mammogram
deserves
a Second Look.

Second
Look…What is It?
Second look is a computer-aided detection system
which assists radiologists by providing a second
review of mammograms to help identify potentially
cancerous lesions. It does not require any additional
procedures for the patient. A standard mammogram
is all that is needed.
There is a difference
between a screening and diagnostic mammogram:
A screening mammogram is performed on women who
are not having any signs or symptoms of a breast
problem. The study includes two views of each
breasts. The results are conveyed to the patient
by mail.
A diagnostic mammogram is performed on women
who are having signs or symptoms of breast disease.
Additional views are taken and sometimes ultrasound
is needed. The doctor confers with the patient
after a diagnostic exam.
The Mammography Department at Southeastern Radiology
